Fairtrade Way
Posted: 09/04/2013

In 2002, we were one of the first towns in the South West to achieve Fairtrade status.  We recently celebrated our 10th birthday with a birthday cake (Fairtrade of course!) lovingly made by one of our Steering Group members.

Over the years, we have worked consistently to raise the profile of Fairtrade and trade justice issues in the town, and we have been well supported by local people, businesses and the Town Council.  To keep up the momentum , we hold monthly Fairtrade Coffee Mornings in the Mortimer Room in the town centre once a month (fourth Saturday, every month except August and December) along with a stall selling Traidcraft goods.  These Coffee Mornings coincide with the local Farmers' Market and we provide a mobile tea and coffee service to stallholders. These Coffee Mornings have been so successful that we are able to make occasional donations to Traidcraft Exchange from our profits.

Many of our local shops and most of the cafes and B&B establishments in the town sell/provide Fairtrade products and we give them all 'We Support Fairtrade in Nailsworth' posters to display. We have joined forces with nearby Stroud to produce a joint Fairtrade Directory for shoppers.

All our local churches have gained 'Fairtrade Church' status and we are working to encourage our primary school and football clubs to become Fairtrade organisations too.  We always hold a special event to celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight.

Though we are very proud of what we have achieved so far we would love to be able to do even more to spread the Fairtrade message and our friendly Steering Group would welcome new members - so do get in touch!
